Portugal's Valpaços wildfire prompts government aid to farmers

A large forest fire ignited on Tuesday in the Cabelo area of Valpaços, Vila Real district, spreading to the neighbouring municipalities of Mirandela, Vinhais and Macedo de Cavaleiros in Bragança. The blaze burned roughly 13,800 hectares of land, including vineyards, olive groves and almond orchards.

At its peak, 528 firefighters, 182 vehicles and two aerial units were deployed; six aircraft later remained on site. The fire entered a resolution phase on Saturday night but experienced strong re‑ignitions that required continued control.

The Portuguese government announced financial assistance for agricultural producers whose crops suffered more than 30% damage. Agriculture Minister José Manuel Fernandes said co‑financing would range from 50% to 100% of losses, with a minimum aid of €10,000 and a maximum of €400,000 per farm. Damage assessments are being compiled by municipal authorities and will be forwarded to the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission for final approval.
