Chile updates security laws and intensifies crime prevention

Chile is implementing new private security regulations under Law No. 21.659, which establishes the Subsecretaría de Prevención del Delito as the governing body and introduces higher standards for training and authorization.

Law enforcement agencies in Chile continue to address various criminal activities. Recent operations include the arrest of individuals involved in violent robberies in Rengo and Iquique, as well as a group targeting elderly citizens in Santiago using distraction tactics. In Valparaíso, a joint operation between Customs, the PDI, and the Maritime Police resulted in five arrests at the port. Additionally, a prisoner escaped from a trust-based rehabilitation center in Valparaíso, prompting security protocols.

On an international level, the Public Ministries of Chile and Peru are strengthening cooperation to combat transnational organized crime through technical exchanges and information sharing. Locally, municipal and police forces in areas like Peralillo and Valparaíso are focusing on community prevention and staff training to enhance public safety.
