Valter Lavitola confesses to masterminding bomb attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci

Valter Lavitola has confessed to being the mastermind behind the October 2025 bomb attack near the home of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci in Pomezia. During a five-hour interrogation at Rebibbia prison, Lavitola claimed he orchestrated the criminal act not for political reasons, but to protect Ranucci. He argued that the attack would force authorities to increase the journalist's security detail, which at the time consisted of only two agents; following the incident, the protection was increased to eight agents.

Investigators are examining the possibility of mafia-style methods in the crime. Gomes Clesio Tavares has been identified as the intermediary between Lavitola and the physical executors of the attack and is currently a fugitive, believed to be in Africa.

The confession has sparked intense political debate in Italy. Matteo Salvini, leader of the Lega, has called on the public broadcaster Rai to suspend its collaboration with Ranucci, citing the disturbing details emerging from the investigation. Meanwhile, members of Fratelli d'Italia have criticized Ranucci's social media posts, in which he compared his situation to historical Italian figures like Aldo Moro and Giovanni Falcone, labeling his comparisons as inappropriate.
