Valverde de Júcar investigation into suspected gender-based violence deaths

Authorities in Cuenca, Spain, are investigating the deaths of a 37-year-old woman and a man found in a residence in Valverde de Júcar on October 8. The bodies showed signs of violence, leading the Government Delegation against Gender Violence to investigate the incident as a potential case of gender-based violence.

The victim, a Romanian national, leaves behind two daughters, aged 6 and 14. Regional equality minister Sara Simón and other officials have condemned the incident, noting that the woman had not previously filed a complaint or utilized regional support resources.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressed condolences to the family, calling for action against structural violence against women. This case brings the recorded number of women murdered by gender violence in Spain to 42 for the year 2026.
