Gender-based violence investigations in Spain
Overview
Authorities in Spain are investigating separate incidents of suspected gender-based violence involving the deaths of women.
In Benidorm, Alicante, police arrested a man for the suspected homicide of a 33-year-old woman following a dispute. Two additional men were detained for allegedly assisting in concealing the crime by transporting the victim’s body to a rural area between Benidorm and Finestrat. The investigation began after individuals reported that an acquaintance had confessed to the killing.
In Valverde de Júcar, Cuenca, officials are investigating the violent deaths of a 37-year-old Romanian woman and her Spanish partner, who were found in their home on October 8. The victim, identified as Luisa, leaves behind two daughters, aged 6 and 14. While preliminary indications suggest gender-based violence, Regional Equality Minister Sara Simón noted that the deceased had not previously filed a report, sought assistance from the regional government’s network of women's centers, or been registered in the VioGén monitoring system.
Castilla-La Mancha President Emiliano García-Page expressed profound sadness and indignation regarding the incident. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressed condolences to the family, calling for action against “structural violence against women.” This case brings the recorded number of women murdered by gender violence in Spain to 42 for the year 2026. Minister Simón has called for increased social vigilance to identify signs of violence and urged the public to support victims who may be unable to seek help due to fear.
