Van Dijk praises Koeman and welcomes Marten de Roon's return to Dutch squad

Virgil van Dijk said he spoke with national‑team coach Ronald Koeman shortly before the squad was announced. He highlighted the positive impact of midfielder Marten de Roon’s return, calling him “of great value for the group and commands respect.”

Van Dijk reflected on the negativity that surrounded the Dutch team after the previous European Championship, noting he had even considered quitting: “After the last Euro I was ready to stop; there was so much negativity in the group.” He stressed that leadership must be shared and that individual disappointment should never harm the team’s collective goals. He also mentioned a March meeting with the players’ council where roles and expectations were discussed.

The defender said he offers his opinion to Koeman but leaves the final selection decisions to the coach, emphasizing a good working relationship between them.
