Van Leeuwen Recycling fire sparks opposition to relocation plans

Residents in Barendrecht and local politicians are expressing concern following a major fire at the Van Leeuwen Recycling facility on Doklaan in Rotterdam. The incident, which caused smoke and odors to reach Barendrecht, has reignited opposition to the municipality of Rotterdam's plan to relocate the company to Pascalweg.

Critics, including EVB council member Roeland Bol, argue that the proposed site near the border of Barendrecht is unsuitable due to its proximity to residential areas, the A15 motorway, and a freight railway. Opponents fear the relocation will lead to noise and odor nuisance, as well as increased safety risks. While Bol noted that a legal appeal to the Council of State may only focus on procedural correctness rather than substantive objections, he and local action groups are calling for the municipality to reconsider the plans in light of the recent fire.
