Van Leeuwen Recycling fire and relocation controversy

A major fire at the Van Leeuwen Recycling facility on Doklaan in Rotterdam has intensified local opposition to the company’s relocation plans and raised significant safety concerns.

Following the incident, which produced smoke and odors reaching Barendrecht, residents and politicians have criticized the municipality of Rotterdam’s proposal to move the facility to Pascalweg. Critics argue the new site is too close to residential areas, the A15 motorway, and a freight railway, potentially causing noise, odor, and safety issues.

The Oud-Charlois Wielewaal district council has demanded clarity on health risks and requested data regarding the specific substances released during the fire. The council is calling for a “clear and binding end date” for operations at the current Doklaan site, arguing that such a large-scale recycling facility is unsuitable for a densely populated neighborhood. Additionally, officials are seeking information on whether stored waste complied with safety regulations and have noted concerns regarding the effectiveness of emergency NL-Alert notifications during the fire.
