Vancouver Island faces heightened wildfire risk amid dry weather and looming super El Niño

The BC Wildfire Service warns that warm, dry conditions will continue across Vancouver Island this weekend and into next week, urging campers to follow fire‑safety rules and check municipal bylaws. Officials note that drought levels are at a “Level 3,” and while no active wildfires are reported on the island, four other fires remain out of control elsewhere in British Columbia.

Scientists from Environment and Climate Change Canada stress that a strong El Niño, likely to develop from June to August, will bring milder winter temperatures, unusually warm coastal waters, and a sea‑level rise of about 20 cm. The combination of reduced snowpack, early melt and drier spring conditions could amplify wildfire danger, raise coastal‑flooding risks, and strain water supplies and hydro‑electric generation on Vancouver Island.
