Vancouver Island residents lose nearly $170,000 to scams
Residents in the Parksville and Qualicum Beach areas of Vancouver Island lost nearly $170,000 to various scams during a single week in July. The Oceanside RCMP received 322 complaints during the period from July 20 to July 26.
Notable fraudulent activities included a $120,000 cryptocurrency scam advertised on social media and a $20,000 loss involving an unregistered investment company. Other incidents involved business email compromise resulting in a $16,500 loss, a computer remote-access scam costing over $7,000, and a $9,000 credit card impersonation scam, though the latter sum was recovered.
In addition to financial fraud, the RCMP reported several other crimes in the region, including thefts of a backpack, a bicycle, and solar panels, as well as vehicle tampering and an attempted residential break-in.
