Vancouver police vehicle collision prompts watchdog investigation
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) has launched an investigation into an incident in Vancouver where a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) vehicle struck a man lying on the ground.
The incident occurred on July 11, 2026, around 11:40 a.m. in a laneway parallel to the 400-block of Main Street, between East Hastings Street and East Pender Street. A VPD officer was driving a marked police cruiser when the vehicle hit the man. While the officer stopped and requested medical assistance, and the man’s injuries initially appeared non-serious, the IIO was notified by a member of the public on August 4 that the injuries may be more severe.
The IIO, which serves as the civilian oversight agency for police in British Columbia, is now seeking witnesses to provide information regarding the collision.
