Vancouver Police Warn Seniors of Rising Distraction Theft Wave
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has issued a citywide warning after 35 distraction thefts were reported in Vancouver in 2026, including 11 incidents in June and July alone. The thefts, which target seniors, involve thieves using sleight‑of‑hand to replace genuine jewelry with fakes or yank items outright, resulting in losses exceeding $245,000 this year.
Police say the perpetrators belong to organized crime rings of both Canadian citizens and foreign nationals that travel across Canada in rented vehicles. Victims cited include 72‑year‑old Janice Yang, whose necklace was stolen on June 12, an 88‑year‑old woman robbed on July 14, and a 76‑year‑old woman whose gold necklace was taken in a similar manner.
VPD Sgt. Tim Russell advised seniors to conceal valuables, keep personal boundaries, attract attention if threatened, and call 911 immediately. In 2025 the city recorded 158 distraction thefts with losses of $364,000.
