The same period saw an AI‑generated political advertisement lure a victim into a bogus cryptocurrency venture, prompting the police to alert residents to both jewelry scams and sophisticated online ad fraud. By late June, the Ontario Provincial Police issued a province‑wide alert about “distraction thefts” targeting jewellery, detailing tactics such as strangers offering fake gifts before swiftly removing genuine items. In early July a resident in the Parksville‑Qualicum Beach area was persuaded to hand over $5,000 after a caller posing as a police officer demanded gift‑card payments. The same individual had previously defrauded another resident of $2,980 by hacking a computer and accessing bank accounts. Police continued to provide a non‑emergency contact number and fraud‑prevention talks. On 18 July Vancouver police investigated a distraction‑theft in which a 76‑year‑old woman was hugged and stripped of a gold necklace and two rings; a female suspect in her thirties with short dark hair and a dark‑green sedan were identified. Toronto officers later charged two residents, 41‑year‑old Constantin Porumbita and Bianca Mitran, with robbery and participation in a criminal organization for a similar scheme that targeted a grandmother and her child. A VPD citywide warning on 28 July noted 35 distraction‑thefts reported in 2026, including 11 in June‑July, with losses exceeding $245,000.
