Greek basketball scandal: Six arrested in match-fixing investigation

A major investigation into alleged match-fixing in Greek basketball has led to the arrest of six individuals, including Vangelis Liolios, the President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK). The coordinated police operation, conducted across Attica, Achaia, and Katerini, targeted suspected illegal interference in the outcome and form of basketball matches linked to betting activities.

Authorities seized over €931,000 in cash, 14 mobile phones, and various digital storage devices during house searches. The investigation, led by the Sports Prosecutor, is examining approximately 49 to 50 matches spanning the period from 2016 to 2026. These include professional league games, youth competitions, and school championships.

Court documents and witness testimonies have revealed allegations of bribery and manipulation. One witness claimed Liolios sought to influence refereeing to favor certain teams, while another described a network of referees receiving instructions. The list of scrutinized matches includes games involving teams such as Promitheas, AEK, and several clubs from Patras, as well as school-level competitions.
