Vanuatu faces El Niño water shortages and signs climate action declaration

Vanuatu is facing significant environmental and policy challenges driven by climate change. The El Niño phenomenon is currently placing heavy pressure on rural farmers, livestock owners, and families. In areas such as rural Efate, water supplies are dwindling as rainwater tanks empty due to a lack of rainfall. Farmers are forced to manage limited supplies between households, crops, and animals, often traveling long distances to rivers or Port Vila to secure water.

In response to long-term climate vulnerability, the Government of Vanuatu has signed the Declaration on Children, Youth, and Climate Action. This commitment aims to place the rights and voices of young people at the center of national adaptation plans and climate policies. The move comes as nearly half of the nation's population is under 18 and many children face displacement or humanitarian assistance due to weather-related disasters and extreme weather events.
