Varkiza, Greece police chase ends in crash after utility‑employee scam

Two men posed as employees of the electricity provider DEDDHE and called a homeowner in the Varkiza suburb of Athens, persuading him to place cash and jewellery in a bag and leave it in his yard for collection. The resident recognized the fraud, alerted the police, and officers from the Security Division quickly located the suspects. A high‑speed pursuit along the coastal avenue resulted in the suspects’ vehicle colliding with three passing cars. After the crash the men abandoned the car and fled on foot toward the beach, after which they disappeared. Police later recovered scattered banknotes from the vehicle and transferred it to the Criminalistics Directorate for detailed examination. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are reminding citizens to be wary of telephone requests for money from individuals claiming to be officials of any organization.

No injuries were reported, but the incident highlights a common phone‑fraud method and the rapid police response to such scams.
