Moldova to target energy compensation for vulnerable households

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has announced that the government will implement a targeted energy compensation mechanism for the upcoming winter season. Due to budget constraints, the state will not be able to provide the same level of support as last year, which reached approximately 80% of eligible households. Tofan stated that a full compensation scheme similar to the previous year would cost roughly 3.8 billion lei, a sum the government currently lacks.

The new strategy will prioritize the most vulnerable households, aiming to cover nearly all of their increased energy costs. The government is currently evaluating several scenarios and is engaging in diplomatic efforts to secure grants from European partners to supplement available funds.

Regarding electricity, Tofan expressed optimism that tariffs will not increase before the end of 2026, despite regional price spikes caused by low water levels in the Danube affecting hydroelectric production. While the Prime Minister remains optimistic, he noted that final pricing decisions rest with the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE).
