Vasilij Kandinskij retrospective opens at Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome

A major retrospective dedicated to Wassily Kandinsky is being held at Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome, running from September 15 until February 14, 2027. Curated by Angela Lampe, the exhibition marks the first major display of the abstract pioneer's work in the capital in 25 years.

The exhibition features over seventy masterpieces sourced from prestigious international institutions, including the Centre Pompidou. The collection is organized into five sections that trace Kandinsky’s artistic evolution and life journey, spanning his origins in Russia to his studies in Munich, his time in Murnau, his involvement with the Bauhaus in Germany, and his final years in Paris.

Key themes include his transition from academic law studies to fine arts, his theoretical contributions such as “Concerning the Spiritual in Art,” and his revolutionary use of color and form to achieve abstraction. The display highlights how his work evolved through various geopolitical shifts, including his return to Russia during World War I and his subsequent integration of biomorphic forms and vibrant colors.
