Vassily Kandinsky exhibition in Rome

Overview

A major monographic exhibition dedicated to the Russian artist Vassily Kandinsky opened at Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome on September 15, 2026, and is scheduled to run until February 14, 2027.

Produced by Arthemisia in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, the showcase features over 70 works that trace Kandinsky’s artistic evolution. The exhibition is organized into five sections, spanning his origins in Russia, his studies in Munich, his time in Murnau, his involvement with the Bauhaus movement in Germany, and his final years in France. Many masterpieces are on loan from the Centre Pompidou in Paris due to temporary restoration closures.

Curated by Angela Lampe, this retrospective marks the first major display of the abstract pioneer’s work in Rome in 25 years. The exhibition highlights Kandinsky’s transition from academic law studies to fine arts and his theoretical contributions, such as “Concerning the Spiritual in Art.” The collection explores his revolutionary use of color and form, his integration of biomorphic shapes, and how his work evolved through geopolitical shifts, including his return to Russia during World War I. The display also includes works by his partner, Gabriele Munter, some of which are being shown for the first time.
