Vatican diplomat Paul Richard Gallagher begins five-day visit to Moscow
Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States, has begun a five-day diplomatic mission to Moscow. The visit, described by Vatican News as ‘diplomacy and dialogue in the service of peace’, is intended to maintain communication channels during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During his stay, Gallagher is scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss cooperation between the Holy See and the Russian Federation, as well as the war in Ukraine. While a meeting with President Vladimir Putin is not planned, the Archbishop will also engage with the Moscow Patriarchate and the local Catholic community, including clergy and laypeople.
This mission follows previous diplomatic efforts by the Holy See, including visits by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and Gallagher’s own recent trip to Ukraine. The Vatican maintains a consistent position of condemning the invasion and seeking a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
