Vatican Excommunicates FSSPX Bishops, Sparks Local Church Warnings

On 2 July 2026 the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a decree declaring the four bishops consecrated by the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) excommunicated for illicit ordinations. The decree branded the act a schismatic breach and said sacraments administered by those bishops are invalid.

FSSPX responded, claiming the Vatican’s decree is “objectively unjust and invalid” and reaffirming loyalty to the Pope while rejecting the sanctions.

In Croatia, parish priest Fr. Benjamin Milković warned his flock not to attend the FSSPX‑run Chapel of St. Jerome, stating that masses, confessions, and marriages offered there are not recognised by the Catholic Church and could jeopardise believers’ spiritual welfare.
