The Holy See announced on 2 July 2026 that six bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) incurred automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication after conducting episcopal consecrations on 1 July without a papal mandate. The Vatican framed the act as schismatic, stating that the consecrations breach canon law and render the sacraments celebrated by SSPX clergy illicit.

U.S. bishops have issued directives urging Catholics to avoid SSPX Masses and sacraments, describing them as an “abuse of the Eucharist” and warning that lay faithful who formally adhere to the Society may be considered schismatic. In Kenya, SSPX Prior Fr. Champroux defended the consecrations as a “genuine state of necessity,” insisting the Society remains in communion with the Pope.

The episode is the first overt test of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy, echoing a similar schism in 1988 when Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre ordained bishops without permission. Vatican officials emphasised that the excommunication applies to the bishops involved and to anyone who persists in participating in SSPX sacraments while rejecting papal authority.
