Vatican faces new crisis over unauthorized ordinations by Society of Saint Pius X

The traditionalist Society of Saint Pius X announced plans to consecrate four bishops on 1 July without papal approval. Vatican officials have not issued a formal statement but have expressed concern, recalling the 1988 illegal ordinations by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre that led to excommunications and a lasting split with the Holy See.

The planned ordinations are seen as a direct challenge to the Pope’s exclusive authority to appoint bishops, and the Society has warned that the crisis in the Catholic Church is too severe to obey the Vatican. Church law stipulates that any bishop ordained without papal permission would be automatically excommunicated, threatening any ongoing reconciliation efforts between the Society and Rome.
