Vatican warns SSPX of excommunication over planned bishop consecrations

On 13 May 2026 Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, reiterated the Vatican’s warning to the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX). The Society has announced that it will consecrate new bishops without a papal mandate, scheduled for early July 2026. The Cardinal cited John Paul II’s Ecclesia Dei letter, stating that such ordinations constitute a schismatic act and that “formal adherence to the schism constitutes a grave offense against God and entails the excommunication established by canon law.” Pope Leo XIV is reported to be praying that SSPX leaders reconsider the decision. The Vatican’s statement follows months of stalled dialogue after a February meeting between Cardinal Fernández and SSPX Superior Davide Pagliarani. The SSPX, founded by Marcel Lefebvre and out of communion since 1988, now numbers around 733 priests and operates in dozens of countries. The warning represents the Holy See’s final attempt to prevent the July consecrations, which would be the most direct challenge to papal authority since the 1988 schism.
