Vatican says Pope takes Ukraine invitation seriously as war continues

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his invitation to the Pope, describing a possible papal visit as "a truly historic moment" of support for the Ukrainian people. Vatican Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Gallagher, speaking after a six‑day trip to Ukraine, said the Holy Father "takes this invitation very seriously" and that the Vatican will study the conditions to determine the appropriate timing and method for a visit, mindful of both Ukraine and broader peace prospects.

During his stay from 17 to 21 July, Gallagher prayed in the heavily damaged St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv, attended an open‑air mass attended by about three thousand worshippers, and met with religious leaders and local communities. The visit coincided with a Russian missile strike that damaged the apostolic nunciature in Kyiv, prompting the Vatican delegation to seek shelter in a bunker. The Vatican has not yet confirmed any concrete plans for a papal trip, noting that Pope Francis previously said he would travel to Ukraine only if he could also visit Russia.

Both officials emphasized Ukraine’s determination to work toward a ceasefire, while the Vatican continues its diplomatic mediation efforts amid the ongoing conflict.
