Vatican studies possible papal visit to war‑torn Ukraine

The Holy See said it will examine the conditions needed for a future papal trip to Ukraine, citing the invitation as "very serious". Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican secretary for relations with states, spent six days in the country meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, foreign‑minister Andryi Sybiha and other officials. He reported gratitude from Ukrainian leaders for the Vatican’s diplomatic and humanitarian support, including efforts led by Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi to secure the return of children and other prisoners taken by Russia.

Gallagher’s visit also marked the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Latin‑rite Catholic structures at the Marian shrine in Berdychiv, attended by thousands of faithful. The Vatican reiterated its backing for Ukraine’s path toward EU accession and its commitment to ongoing dialogue with international partners and, where possible, Russian authorities.
