Vatican to build €100 million agrivoltaic solar plant

The Vatican plans to invest approximately €100 million to construct a large-scale agrivoltaic renewable energy plant to achieve energy self-sufficiency. The project is expected to have a capacity of 80 to 90 megawatts, making it one of the largest installations of its kind in Italy.

Located at the Santa Maria di Galeria estate on the northwestern outskirts of Rome, the facility will utilize an innovative system where solar panels are mounted several meters above the ground. This allows for continued agricultural production beneath the panels, with the shade helping to reduce water evaporation and protect crops from extreme weather. The installation is expected to cover roughly 200 hectares of the 450-hectare property.

The plant is designed to power Vatican Radio's transmission station and support various Holy See-linked properties, including the Bambino Gesù hospital in Rome. Any surplus electricity generated will be supplied to the Italian national power grid. Following a bilateral agreement ratified by Italy, the project is estimated to take between 18 and 24 months to complete, including administrative and permitting processes.
