Vatican agrivoltaic solar plant project
Overview
The Vatican has announced a €100 million investment to construct a large-scale agrivoltaic renewable energy plant at the Santa Maria di Galeria estate near Rome. The project aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency and is expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months.
The facility will cover approximately 200 hectares with a capacity of 80 to 90 megawatts, utilizing mobile solar panels mounted above the ground to allow for continued agricultural production. This design is intended to protect crops from extreme weather and reduce water evaporation.
Generated electricity will support Vatican Radio, Vatican City, and the Bambino Gesù hospital, with any surplus power supplied to the Italian national grid. The initiative follows a 2024 environmental push by Pope Francis and is supported by a legal framework agreement between Italy and the Holy See, as well as a protocol with the Italian energy company ACEA.
