Vatican warns Society of Saint Pius X ahead of unauthorized bishop consecrations

The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) has announced that it will consecrate four new bishops on 1 July at its headquarters in Ecône, Switzerland, without a papal mandate. The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith warned the group that proceeding with the ordinations would constitute a schismatic act and could lead to automatic excommunication. Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the dicastery, issued a statement on 13 May urging the SSPX to reverse the decision, while former prefect Cardinal Gerhard Müller called for a clear response from Rome during a recent consistory. Within the SSPX, some members favor avoiding further confrontation, whereas others insist on maintaining a hard‑line stance against the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. The upcoming consecrations echo the 1988 illicit ordinations that triggered the original split between the SSPX and the Holy See.
