Václav Havel legacy commemorated through art and exhibitions in Czech Republic

Various cultural and educational projects across the Czech Republic are commemorating the upcoming 90th birthday of Václav Havel, the first president of the Czech Republic and a prominent dramatist.

In Pardubice, the city is participating in the national Havel90 project. Key events include an exhibition titled ‘Truth and Love 2.0’ at Příhrádek, featuring artworks by local primary school students that interpret Havel’s values of freedom, responsibility, and dialogue. The East Bohemian Theatre will also serve as a central venue for commemorative activities in October.

In Plzeň, students from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Arts at the University of West Bohemia have developed the ‘Havel 26’ project. This initiative involves dozens of artistic interpretations—ranging from painting and photography to new media—that relate Havel’s writings on truth, language manipulation, and civic engagement to the perspectives of a generation raised in democracy. These works will be exhibited at several locations, including Radbuzská náplavka, the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery, and the Museum and Gallery of North Plzeňsko.
