Václav Havel commemorated on 90th birth anniversary
Various commemorative events and cultural programs are taking place across the Czech Republic and Slovakia to honor the 90th anniversary of Václav Havel's birth. As a former president, playwright, and prominent dissident, Havel's legacy is being marked through diverse activities including candlelit vigils in Tábor, theatrical readings, and exhibitions.
In Prague, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the house where Havel lived during the signing of Charter 77. Other tributes include the return of his historic presidential office furniture to Prague Castle after being preserved by private collectors for over two decades. In Plzeň, commemorations included visits to his former prison site and the unveiling of a memorial bench.
Cultural institutions are also engaging with his literary and philosophical work. This includes podcast series, discussions on his impact on democracy, and the release of previously unpublished photographs by Tomki Němec. Public opinion research indicates that his positive impact on the country remains widely recognized, with approximately 76 percent of the population viewing his role favorably.
