Vegetable prices surge in Vietnam following heavy flooding
Heavy rainfall and flooding in Vietnam have significantly reduced the supply of vegetables, causing prices to surge in several regions. In Lam Dong and Ho Chi Minh City, many green vegetables are now selling for one and a half to twice their usual rates. For instance, coriander in Da Lat has risen from 30,000-40,000 VND/kg to 90,000-100,000 VND/kg. Other items like green chili, spring onions, and spinach have also seen substantial increases, with some varieties exceeding 100,000 VND/kg.
At the Binh Dien Agricultural Wholesale Market in Ho Chi Minh City, traders report a 15-20% decrease in vegetable volume compared to last month due to crop damage from flooding. This scarcity has forced consumers to adjust their shopping habits, often opting for cheaper root vegetables or gourds to manage rising food costs.
In contrast to the vegetable market, dragon fruit prices in the Mekong Delta show signs of recovery. After a period of decline, white-fleshed dragon fruit is being purchased at farms for 14,000-15,000 VND/kg, while red-fleshed varieties are fetching between 20,000 and 27,000 VND/kg depending on quality.
