Vegetable protein linked to slower biological aging and lower health risks

A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition involving over 15,000 adults from China, the United Kingdom, and the United States suggests that vegetable protein consumption is associated with slower biological aging and a reduced risk of sarcopenic obesity.

Sarcopenic obesity is a condition characterized by abdominal fat accumulation combined with decreased muscle mass and grip strength. Researchers found that higher vegetable protein intake was linked to a 14% lower risk of developing this condition, with the most significant benefits observed in individuals with central obesity. Notably, replacing just 5% of daily caloric intake from animal protein with an equivalent amount of vegetable protein was associated with a 34% reduction in sarcopenic obesity risk.

While the data also indicated that a higher proportion of vegetable protein relates to a slower rate of estimated biological aging, researchers cautioned that the observational nature of the study means a causal relationship cannot be definitively established, and other influencing factors may exist.
