Vegetation fires reported in the Netherlands and Belgium

Two separate vegetation fires were reported in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In the Kwade Hoek dune area in Goedereede, Netherlands, a significant fire broke out on the evening of August 3, 2026. The fire produced a large smoke column, prompting an emergency response that included six fire engines and twelve additional units on standby. Authorities used drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras to locate hotspots and prevent further spread. While cattle grazing in the vicinity were moved to safety, no injuries were reported, and the cause remains unknown.

In Herne, Belgium, a fire involving green waste occurred near a residential care center. Due to the proximity to the facility, the Brandweerzone Vlaams-Brabant West deployed extra equipment, including a command vehicle and water tanker. The fire was quickly contained, and officials confirmed there was no impact from smoke on the residents. Authorities used the incident to warn citizens about the increased risk of vegetation fires during periods of heat and drought.
