Wildfire risk and outbreaks in the Netherlands

Overview

In early August 2026, Dutch officials warned that the country remained highly vulnerable to wildfires despite a recent lull in large fires. On 2 August, Edwin Kok, the national fire-management coordinator, noted that the risk would not ease without several weeks of substantial rain, citing the 2020 Deurnese Peel peat fire as a warning for how long-lasting fires can develop.

By 6 August, preventive measures intensified. Police in Groningen issued warnings against discarding flammable waste or parking on dry grass, while authorities in Schouwen-Duiveland launched the "Think like a firefighter" campaign, distributing multilingual signage to tourism businesses to encourage visitor cooperation.

On 8 August, the situation escalated as large-scale nature fires broke out across several regions. A significant blaze in the Herperduin nature reserve near Oss, covering approximately 100 by 150 meters, required emergency services to advise nearby residents to close windows and doors due to heavy smoke. While crews brought the Herperduin blaze under control by early morning, they remained on-site to prevent reignition.

Other significant incidents included a fire in the Kwade Hoek dune area in Goedereede, which produced a large smoke column and required the use of thermal imaging drones to locate hotspots. Additional fires were reported near Venray and the A50 motorway near Heteren. The scale of these incidents necessitated a GRIP 3 escalation for coordinated regional management, with defense forces deploying Chinook helicopters to drop water from the Maas river. Smoke from these various incidents spread across large parts of the country.
