Italy school infrastructure faces safety and certification gaps

As the new school year begins across Italy, reports highlight a complex landscape of infrastructure improvements, safety concerns, and regional disparities. 14,512 school buildings—approximately 36.3% of the national total—lack essential certifications for usability, fire prevention, and thermal systems. This issue is most acute in the Islands, where over 53% of buildings are uncertified, compared to roughly 21% in the North-East.

Legambiente’s “Ecosistema Scuola” report notes that while PNRR funds have aided maintenance and energy efficiency, significant gaps remain in sustainability and services. In Campania, only 12% of buildings possess usability certificates.

Amidst these systemic challenges, various municipalities are reporting localized successes and struggles. Some towns, such as Montesilvano and San Giuliano Terme, have inaugurated renovated, energy-efficient facilities. Conversely, communities like Careri are protesting school closures that threaten local survival, while others, such as Vibo Valentia, face criticism regarding road safety and infrastructure around educational sites.
