Velenkosini Hlabisa Sets South Africa Local Election for Nov 4, 2026

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa gazetted the proclamation on 7 August 2026, officially setting South Africa's local government elections for 4 November 2026. The proclamation also marked the midnight deadline for online voter registration and verification, prompting a final call to citizens to confirm their status before the roll closed.

During the registration weekend on 1–2 August, about 1.7 million South Africans used the Independent Electoral Commission’s portal, including roughly 292 000 first‑time voters and more than 1.5 million who updated existing details. Hlabisa stressed that law‑enforcement agencies were prepared to ensure a safe, violence‑free campaigning environment ahead of the polls.
