Veliko Tarnovo hosts breast cancer awareness campaign

A national breast cancer awareness campaign, titled ‘Self-Examine! Early diagnosis can save your life!’, was presented in Veliko Tarnovo. The initiative, organized by the Society for Breast Imaging and supported by the Zonta Club Veliko Tarnovo, aims to increase public awareness during October, the month dedicated to breast cancer awareness.

Health experts noted that more than 4,000 people in Bulgaria are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. However, when detected in the early stages, the disease is treatable in 97% of cases. The campaign emphasized that while self-examination is important, any unusual changes should prompt a consultation with a specialist rather than serving as a replacement for professional medical advice.

The event included the screening of the documentary film ‘Flower in a Storm’, which features the emotional stories of five patients who have navigated the disease. Medical professionals, including oncologist Dr. Dora Zakova, participated in discussions with students and local residents, highlighting that ultrasound examinations can be covered by the National Health Insurance Fund with a referral from a general practitioner.
