Venancio Mondlane to face Supreme Court trial in Mozambique

Opposition politician Venancio Mondlane is preparing to face trial before Mozambique’s Supreme Court following the disputed October 2024 presidential election. Mondlane, who ran as an independent candidate backed by the Podemos party, was notified of the proceedings on August 25, 2026. He faces five charges, including public advocacy of crime, incitement to terrorism, and incitement to collective disobedience.

The charges stem from widespread unrest that followed the election results, in which the Constitutional Council declared Daniel Chapo of the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) the winner with 65.17 percent of the vote. Mondlane, who received 24.19 percent, rejected the outcome. The subsequent protests resulted in significant violence and destruction, with reports indicating more than 300 people were killed.

Prosecutors allege that Mondlane orchestrated a strategy to destabilize the state, including directing protests and blockades from abroad. Mondlane denies all accusations. Forquilha, the leader of the Podemos party, has announced intention to testify during the trial to provide accounts of the events that occurred during the street demonstrations.
