Veneto wine output stays on target despite extreme 2026 weather

The 52nd Trittico Vitivinicolo Veneto meeting reported that 2026 grape yields in the Veneto region are expected to match last year's levels despite a challenging climate. Above‑average temperatures, isolated frosts and extreme May conditions were recorded, yet vines sprouted early and showed slightly higher potential fertility than in 2025. Disease pressure from downy mildew was lower, but the region continues to grapple with the flavescence dorée insect vector, Scaphoideus titanus, detected in 92 % of vineyards, prompting mandatory insecticide treatments and removal of symptomatic plants. Organisers highlighted ongoing research into genetically edited vines to boost disease resistance. “Even with climate changes and geopolitical events, the Veneto viticulture chain continues to guarantee a significant yield,” said Veneto Agricoltura director Federico Caner. Regional assessor Dario Bond added that market support remains strong, stressing the need to translate good harvest numbers into sales. The previous year’s production reached 14.7 million quintals of grapes and 11.4 million hectoliters of wine, valued at €1.9 billion.
