Venezuela and Dominican Republic Begin Gradual Diplomatic Normalization
On 2 August 2026 the governments of Venezuela and the Dominican Republic announced the start of a gradual process to normalize diplomatic and consular relations after a two‑year rupture that began in 2024 when Santo Domingo refused to recognise Nicolás Maduro’s re‑election. The two sides said the initiative will be carried out under a jointly‑developed roadmap. The first phase will restore consular services, including the processing of passports, visas and other legal certifications for citizens of both countries. A second phase will move toward full diplomatic ties according to a schedule to be agreed by the parties. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez of Venezuela and President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic both expressed a willingness to pursue the process through dialogue, mutual respect and adherence to international law. The announcement follows the January 2026 U.S. operation that captured Maduro, the restoration of direct flights between Caracas and Santo Domingo in February 2026, and similar normalisation steps with Peru and Chile.
The foreign ministries noted that no specific dates have yet been set for high‑level political meetings, but the roadmap is intended to guide the gradual return of diplomatic delegations to their respective capitals.
