Venezuela diplomatic and political normalization

Venezuela continues its period of diplomatic normalization and political dialogue. Following the August 2026 roadmap to restore relations with the Dominican Republic, the country is expanding its international engagement. The Netherlands has formalized its representation through Ambassador Carmen Gonsalves to strengthen technical cooperation, particularly following recent seismic events.

In the realm of political dialogue, Dinorah Figuera, head of the opposition delegation, welcomed European Union support for discussions with the Chavista government. These talks have produced initial agreements concerning the renewal of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice and the recovery of Venezuelan assets at the Bank of England to assist earthquake victims. Additionally, Venezuela is pursuing strategic cooperation with African nations.

Regional ties are also strengthening through new agreements with Caribbean neighbors. In late August 2026, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez and Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley signed a joint declaration at Miraflores Palace to boost cooperation in energy, agriculture, tourism, and education. This pact includes the establishment of a mixed commission to manage projects and a linguistic exchange program for teachers. The visit also included an inspection of a Barbadian-donated field hospital in Guarenas, which has treated thousands of patients following recent seismic activity.

Beyond regional diplomacy, Rodríguez announced domestic reforms aimed at improving citizen mobility and combating extortion by eliminating urban police checkpoints, known as ‘alcabalas’, in favor of reinforced patrolling. Economically, Rodríguez reported that oil production has reached its highest level since 2019, exceeding 1.23 million barrels per day, alongside a projected GDP growth of 6.5%.
