Venezuela and Suriname sign ten strategic cooperation agreements

Venezuela and Suriname have signed ten bilateral agreements to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties. During an official visit to Paramaribo, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez met with Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons to formalize cooperation across several strategic sectors.

A primary focus of the agreements is the energy sector. Venezuela has offered to provide technical expertise and professional training to support Suriname’s emerging oil and gas industry, utilizing the Venezuelan University of Hydrocarbons to assist workers following recent major discoveries in Surinamese waters.

Other key agreements include:

• Fisheries: A renewed agreement provides a legal framework for approximately 200 Venezuelan fishing vessels to operate in the Atlantic corridor, facilitating the export of species like snapper to international markets. • Transportation and Tourism: Both nations agreed to reactivate commercial air routes to boost regional connectivity and tourism. • Agriculture and Education: The pacts cover food security, agricultural cooperation, and academic exchanges.

The visit marks a significant step in consolidating a relationship that has spanned five decades, aiming to translate diplomatic history into tangible economic development for both populations.
