Venezuela dialogue table set to resume second phase in September

The second phase of the dialogue table between the Venezuelan government and representatives of the 2015 National Assembly is tentatively scheduled to resume on September 15. Dinorah Figuera, head of the opposition delegation, confirmed the willingness to return to the negotiations. The upcoming agenda is expected to focus on establishing civil and political guarantees, as well as protecting freedom of expression.

Previous rounds of talks in August resulted in two initial consensus points: the comprehensive restructuring of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) and the recovery of Venezuelan state assets abroad to assist communities affected by earthquakes in June.

In a related analysis, the research center Laboratorio de Paz (LabPaz) issued a report warning of a “gray zone” in the current political climate. While acknowledging the opportunity for democratic reinstitutionalization, the report emphasizes that any transition must be accompanied by public debate, social scrutiny, and citizen organization to ensure that economic openings and political reforms lead toward a genuine democracy.
