Venezuela unblocks web portals following political dialogue
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has ordered the immediate lifting of restrictions on a new group of digital platforms and web portals in Venezuela. This decision follows reports from the second cycle of dialogue between the government and the opposition, which focused on freedom of expression and the right to information.
The measure follows a previous order from the National Commission of Telecommunications (Conatel) on September 17 to restore access to various national and international digital media. While the government describes these actions as lifting 'administrative measures' to reaffirm commitment to diverse thought, monitoring organizations note the process remains partial.
VE Sin Filtro reported that while approximately 84 domains have been unblocked across various internet providers, over 160 domains remain restricted. This includes news sites, human rights organizations, and tools such as VPNs. The organization noted that effectiveness varies by provider, with different levels of access observed on networks like CANTV, Movistar, and Digitel.
Journalist unions and independent media networks have called for more tangible results, including the definitive removal of all digital censorship and the cessation of judicial persecution against communicators. Jorge Rodríguez also stated that the unblocking process includes the lifting of administrative and judicial sanctions against certain journalists.
