Press freedom and censorship in Venezuela

Journalistic organizations and NGOs in Venezuela have documented a pattern of systemic censorship and attacks on freedom of expression. In July 2026, the NGO Espacio Público reported 26 violations, noting that 77.78% of victims were journalists. These incidents, often involving intimidation by security forces and public officials, followed an emergency state declared after earthquakes in late June. Officials such as acting president Delcy Rodríguez and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello used rhetoric to delegitimize reporting, with Rodríguez referring to citizen reports as ‘media laboratories’ and Cabello characterizing coverage as a ‘media war.’

By late August, reports from the Colegio Nacional de Periodistas (CNP) and the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Prensa (SNTP) indicated that these restrictions are structural. The CNP Caracas recorded 134 aggressions against the press between January and July 2026, including arbitrary detentions and the forced deletion of content. Additionally, investigations by Cazadores de Fake News identified an illegal digital influence network using fake news websites and social media accounts to target independent journalists.

By late August 2026, the crisis expanded to include severe economic instability, with Un Mundo Sin Mordaza reporting an accumulated inflation rate of 129.82% for the first half of the year. This economic pressure is marked by a significant gap between a minimum wage of approximately 0.21 USD and a basic food basket costing 772.74 USD. Concurrently, social unrest has risen, with protests increasing by 144% compared to the previous year. The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) has documented the closure of radio stations and restrictions on journalists dating back to 1999, a report that is expected to be included in technical negotiations scheduled for September.
