Venezuela Catholic Church demands free elections and institutional reform

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) has issued a pastoral exhortation calling for free and transparent elections, the cessation of political disqualifications, and the renewal of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) to ensure impartiality and independence.

During its 126th Ordinary Plenary Assembly, the bishops warned that the country’s political climate is worsening due to polarization, a lack of institutionalism, and the restriction of democratic guarantees. They also highlighted a severe humanitarian and structural crisis, noting the collapse of public health and education systems caused by low wages and official neglect. The CEV reported that most citizens cannot afford the basic food basket, as salaries are largely replaced by non-contributory bonuses.

Additionally, the Church addressed the aftermath of recent earthquakes, noting that approximately 200,000 students remain without regular classroom activities as schools are either structurally damaged or repurposed as temporary shelters for victims. The CEV called for the repeal of laws restricting NGOs and urged a national agreement based on truth, forgiveness, and justice to address the ongoing crisis.
