Venezuela faces persistent press censorship and digital disinformation networks

Journalistic organizations in Venezuela are reporting persistent structural censorship and systemic restrictions on press freedom. The Colegio Nacional de Periodistas (CNP) and the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Prensa (SNTP) have documented ongoing criminalization, digital blockades, and legal insecurity. Between January and July 2026, the CNP Caracas recorded 134 aggressions against the press, including intimidation, arbitrary detentions, and the forced deletion of content by media workers.

In a related development, the NGO Cazadores de Fake News has identified an illegal digital influence network designed to protect businessman Alejandro Betancourt López. The investigation claims this network, consisting of dozens of X accounts and multiple fake news websites, targets independent journalists and media outlets investigating Betancourt’s commercial operations and energy links. The network reportedly engages in coordinated attacks against reporters and media organizations that scrutinize Betancourt or criticize the current administration.
