Venezuela faces surge in respiratory infections and dengue

Venezuela is facing a simultaneous surge in respiratory infections, COVID-19, influenza, and dengue. The state of Trujillo has recorded the highest incidence of acute respiratory infections in the country, with 181 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Nationally, respiratory infections have increased by 2.26%, with infants under one year old being the most vulnerable group.

Dengue cases are also rising, with Trujillo, Delta Amacuro, and Mérida leading the rates. Of the 10,630 reported dengue infections nationwide, 25% have been classified as severe, primarily affecting children aged 0 to 9.

Infectious disease specialist Julio Castro noted that the transmission patterns of these viruses have changed post-pandemic, with outbreaks occurring three to four times a year rather than following predictable seasonal peaks. Contributing factors to the spread include increased human mobility during vacation periods and overcrowding in temporary shelters. Experts have issued an alert, urging continued vigilance and the reinforcement of basic prevention measures to mitigate the pressure on the healthcare system.
