Infectious disease outbreaks in Venezuela

Overview

Venezuela is experiencing a simultaneous surge in respiratory infections, including COVID-19 and influenza, alongside rising dengue cases. The state of Trujillo has reported the highest incidence of acute respiratory infections, with 181 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Nationally, dengue infections have reached 10,630 reported cases, with 25% classified as severe, primarily affecting children aged 0 to 9.

In response to these and other infectious disease threats, health authorities are implementing various interventions. In Venezuela, the Ministry of Popular Power for Health, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a training initiative in Amazonas state. This program aims to certify 15 indigenous community spokespersons in malaria diagnosis and treatment to strengthen regional laboratory networks and epidemiological control in remote areas.

While the Venezuelan situation involves respiratory and dengue outbreaks, regional health concerns also extend to the Dominican Republic, where authorities have activated alerts for leptospirosis, dengue, malaria, and rabies.
